ACME Sawfilers and Saw Sharpening Equipment Manuals

I don't know how many of these things are in existence, but they are HUGE. I almost bought one at an auction last year, but I couldn't bring myself to the thought of carrying it out to the truck. It must weigh a couple hundred pounds.

Anyway, I just got an email from a fellow sawfiler in Wisconsin who just bought one of these. He's looking for the manual or any advice on how to use it. If you've got one, let us know how this thing works! It would be great if someone could send me the manual so I could post it up here for all to read.

  1. Hi Matt,

I don't have a manual of the machine, I found a 10 page Patent description, 5 Pages text 5 Pages technical drawings.

Let me kow if this is interesting to you. I own the machine for a while and have not tried it.

    best regards

  2. Al -
I'd love to have that stuff. If you can put it in PDF format, I'll post it up here!

If you want to learn how to use the ACME, contact Mark Harrell at Bad Axe Toolworks (see the links for 'good saws'). I think he's been using one for quite a while now.

  5. I recently picked up several Acme handsaw filers in Anchorage, AK, and as luck would have it, I found a very nice copy of the Acme Saw Shop Manual, which has instructions for the circular saw sharpener and and the handsaw filer. I posted a copy on my blog at http://alaskawoodworker.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/acme-saw-shop-manual.pdf

  6. I have several pieces of old ACME saw sharpening equipment. My daddy has a saw shop in Jackson, Mississippi and bought his shop back in 1974 and all the equipment was in there at the time of purchase. I'm assuming it is 1950ish equipment. If any one could give me info on it it would much be appreciated. My daddy died back in March of this year. Just trying to figure out how much it is worth and how to go about selling it. I can be reached at jrbenson01@ymail.com. Thanks so much!

  7. My grandfather had one and filed many handsaws back in the 70's. I really never got the total hang of it. I 'm pretty you filed most handsaws at 20 degrees. Start with machine set to the left and file approx 3 strokes on every other tooth. At the end switch to opposite 20 and file every other tooth. Use hand wheel to advance saw and apply light pressure when filing. Adjust file angle on front and rear of file holder to fit saw tooth. Let the machine do the work just get use to how much to advance the hand wheel per tooth and how much pressure to apply as the file strokes away from you.

  11. Don't overwork your light-duty saw. Cut the pieces one by one, as you measure and mark them, rather than do all the marking at one time and the cutting at another.power tools
