Foley Saw Filers

This is my saw filing blog. I hope that you find it useful! I will add pictures and comments as time permits. If you have questions or comments, please feel free to post them on here. I'm sure others will have the same questions down the road, and it'd be nice to have a record.

I have two Foley 387 filers, one F-61 filer, a pair of Foley 385 retoothers and a Foley 352 tooth setter. We'll see them in use over the next few months.

  1. Matt...I have a Foley Saw Filer. I believe it is a Model 387 and some other equipment bought at the same time direct from Foley years ago. It's been in storage and barely used (in other words in very good condition). Can you suggest a good place for me to sell it and a fair market value?

  2. Fair market value is tricky with this equipment. You can look on ebay to see what this stuff sells for to decide what you want for it. Filers can sell between $50 and $300, depending on condition and how much somebody wants it.

Feel free to send me some pictures. I can post an ad up here for you for free. I get a couple hundred hits a month, so you'll have a much better chance of selling it without having to deal with all of the bologna on ebay or craigslist and we can leave it up for as long as it takes to sell.

It looks you live in the greater NOLA area. I lived in the Warehouse District about 10 years ago. It sure was fun.

  3. Matt,

I have a pristine 387 and a 392 Power Setter. I want to get them back into use. One question I have is how much noise should the machine make when in use. Even when I just hand crank the drive wheel on the 387, it just doesn't seem like a well oiled machine.

Should I disconnect the motor and see if the resistance is in the motor or in th machine? Is there a better way? Maybe they were just noisy machines.

    Thanks,

    Paul

    1. I have a Model 61 Foley saw filer. It was locked upp when I got it, and while trying to loosen it, I broke the cam shaft assembly. I have it at a welder to see if he can repair it, but if you know of any one who has parts, I would like a replacement. Thanks. Kurt

  5. Hi Mat,

I hope you’re still around, alive and kicking. I recently bought a Foley 387 at a yard sale for $50. As usual, no carrier bar or clamps, so a machinist friend and myself made a set to your exact specs and they work perfectly. Thank you so much.

There seems to be 2 gauges that when placed on the carrier bar, give the proper height for clamping the handsaw for filing. Of course I don’t have these, and am very doubtful that they can be acquired.

In this regard, would you be able to tell me how high above the carrier bar or above the vise jaws the saw teeth are to be for optimal saw filing. Maybe even a picture of an actual gauge, or a drawing with the dimensions.

I presently just use a little ¾” block of wood on top of the bar, left and right to make the height even.

If you’d like any pictures of my setup, let me know. I am retired, but do sharpening out of my garage for the public. I used to do just about everything except hand saws, because of failing eyesight, but with this new / old filer, I can offer hand saw filing as well. My first attempt yesterday, on a rusty old saw seemed to work quite well.

Thanks, hope to hear from you soon.

  6. I recently acquired an 387 and F5 in excellent condition. Complete except for carrier height gauge for filers and height gauge for 385. Appears Sharpening supplies no longer carries the carrier hieght gauge. Anyone have any height gauges or drawings, etc. Many thanks for nay response.
